SummerViz 2018

We are pleased to announce SummerViz 2018, the second Australian Summer School on Data Visualisation. This is the perfect Summer School if you are an Honours, Masters or PhD student, who is about to start a research project in data visualisation. It will also suit PostDoc researchers who are moving into data vis. Learn how to effectively apply Data Visualisation, which is one of the most powerful ways for understanding data and communicating insights to your audience.

Morning lectures by leading researchers will cover the basics of data visualisation followed by hands on studio classes, which introduce the most popular tools and design methodologies. For the rest of the day you will get to know your fellow students by working on a group project. The project with the best visualisation will be awarded a prize at the end of the week. All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

The Summer School will be held at Clayton Campus of Monash University in Melbourne. It will include a tour of the CAVE2™ hybrid 2D and 3D virtual reality environment, as well as a visit to sensiLab to see innovative visualisation research projects at Monash.

Program

The morning lectures will cover topics such as History & Future of Data Visualisation, Data Visualisation: What, Why & How, Scientific Visualisation, Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality, Data Visualisation Research Methodology, and Visual Analytics.
The afternoon studio classes will cover software tools and methods such as 5 design sheet methodology, R, D3, ParaView, and Unity.

Accommodation

A number of rooms will be made available through Mannix College in walking distance to the main venue of the summer school. Single rooms provided by Mannix College offer basic student accommodation with shared bathrooms. The costs of accommodation will be covered with registration B.

Registration and Costs

Registration for SummerViz 2018 is a two stage process. The number of participants is limited.

Stage 1Expression of interest by 1 December 2017.

Confirmation of participation will be sent on 8 December 2017.

Stage 2 — Payment of registration fee by 17 December 2017 for confirmed participants.

Confirmed participants of SummerViz 2018 are required to pay a registration fee. There are two registration options. Both registration options cover the participation fee, the SummerVis reception, SummerViz dinner, and transportation to these events. Registration B additionally includes accomodation and breakfast.
