Immersive analytics investigates how new interaction and display technologies can be used to support analytical reasoning and decision making. The aim is to provide multi-sensory interfaces for analytics software that support collaboration and allow users to immerse themselves in their data and designs.
Immersive analytics is an exciting research initiative that builds on technologies such as large touch surfaces, immersive virtual reality environments, virtual and augmented reality technologies such as Google Glass or Oculus Rift, and new tracking and gesture recognition devices such as Leap Motion.
Immersive analytics research at Monash is underpinned by the $1.8M CAVE2TM at the New Horizons building in Clayton and SensiLab at Caulfield. On the one hand the CAVE2 provides the world’s most advanced immersive hybrid 2D and 3D virtual reality environment. On the other hand, SensiLab provides an environment in which immersive analytics researchers can explore lower cost alternatives with the aim of “democratising” the kind of experience provided by the CAVE2.
Immersive analytics is being trialed in five application areas:

- Business Intelligence & Logistics
- Design & Fabrication

- GraVVITAS, audio and haptic presentation of information graphics to blind people
- Immersive 3D reconstruction of Angkor Wat
- Collaborative Data Exploration in the CAVE2 (ContextUWall)
- Visualisation of brain network activity
- Visual analytics of metabolic networks
